BEAUTY FULL – MUNICH FABRIC START EXPANDS CONTINUOUSLY

The organiser of MUNICH FABRIC START is extremely satisfied with the show which took place on 5-7 February 2013 in Munich, and sees a continuous positive development as an international trade fair in recent years. Despite the nearly fully-booked trade fair calendar in spring and the unwilling schedule conflict with the fair in Milan, MUNICH FABRIC START still recorded a slight increase in visitors number, together with 840 exhibitors offering an approximate of 1300 collections in various areas as a perfect sourcing platform.

“Due to the early date and the growing portfolio in recent years, MUNICH FABRIC START becomes more and more important to us. Three days long, we have a high quality and international laboratory where we can work and draw on”, says Daniel Wingate, Fashion Director of Escada. For the first Designer’s Walk, he exclusively led a group of journalists through the exhibition and showed a 2-hour intensive view into his design world, where he impressively presented the way to create a collection. “A great part of inspiration for a collection we take directly from the fabrics. One could say we get our appetisers at the show, from which we prepare the main course”, said Wingate. Its ingredients are, for example, from Solstiss, the traditional home of lace from France, but also from Taroni, the Italian specialist for prints. “We have noticed a clear trend towards luxury”, says Sylvia Fischer of Taroni. “For example, heavy silk qualities that we manufacture on traditional looms are increasingly demanded again.”

The motto of this season “BEAUTY FULL” also stands for this development. In contrary to the though economic times, fashion is now offering quality, beauty and diversity in combination with technical fabric innovation and know-how. However, since the requirements for fabric manufacturers have changed drastically, the need for information is particularly huge, with respect to an increasingly complex sourcing market. In addition to creativity and quality, factors such as delivery time, price, eco-friendliness and sustainability take on more and more important roles and put buyers and manufacturers under high pressure. The fair has responded by offering an orientation of established international exhibitor portfolio, with specific exhibition areas and its usual openness to innovative approaches and concepts, which provide indicative trend information for visitors.

New Denim-Technologies at BLUEZONE
The BLUEZONE that took place for 2 days, presented itself with a special glamour this time. New technologies in sustainability and environmental awareness are needed, particularly in the manufacturing, washing and finishing of jeans. Under the motto “Overground Nomadix”, the international denim community came together in a metropolitan and inspiring ambiance, and impressed by a creative and efficient work with latest designs, finishing, and technologies.

The laser performance by the Spanish finishing specialist “Jeanologia” impressively showed how it is possible to produce jeans in a sustainable way with the current laser technology. “We must move away from the idea that ECO is only a look”, explained Enrique Silla of Jeanologia in a panel of experts in the BLUEZONE. “ECO is a lifestyle that will continuously be established. We need to clarify step by step with the consumers about how the product is manufactured. The process must be transparent like an open kitchen in a restaurant.”

Eco Village - Sustainability meets High Fashion
For the first time, C.L.A.S.S., one of the largest international eco-platforms, presented itself with a showroom in the organicselection, and showed a highly fashionable selection of sustainable fabrics, proving that sustainability, responsibility and fashion can be unified attributes. The strong demand in the organicselection and ECO - Additionals area from renowned companies such as Gucci, Betty Barclay, Otto, Vaude and many others confirms that sustainability continues gaining its relevance. It was also the first time that certified accessories were integrated. A product can be truly sustainable only if both, fabrics and accessories are certified.

The first impression of the three fair days and the MUNICH FABRIC NIGHT on the second evening, where about 1000 visitors and exhibitors met in the “Kesselhaus” for the legendary get-together, can be found on our website in the Press gallery for downloading.

The next MUNICH FABRIC START will be held from 3 to 5 September 2013 and the BLUEZONE will run concurrently on the first two days of the fair. An initial selection of the high-quality fabric collections can already be found at our premium event VIEW on 10 and 11 July 2013.

There is a reason why the trend-team has picked the motto “Beauty Full” for the next edition of MUNICH FABRICSTART from 5-7 February 2013. Contrasting to the economic recession, fashion now represents quality, beauty anddiversity. The 50s and 60s and frivolous sexiness through transparency and necklines or slits are strong elements for thenew SPRING.SUMMER 2014 season, so as the techno-style jungle inspiration. It is all about high fashion, beautification,enhancement and enchantment in combination with technical fabric innovations and know how.

The most obvious task of modern clothing: adorning people with diversified beauty of fashion. The first priority of MUNICH FABRIC START for this season was successfully met, by gathering more than 840 exhibitors who present theirhigh quality fabrics and additionals at the MOC on over 40 000 square meters, and turning the exhibition halls into an internationalhotspot for top-class designers, buyers, product managers and media representatives during the 3 fair days.

“We are pleased about the confidence of exhibitors from all over the world placed on our effort, and this is proven againwith a full house here in Munich”, says Mr. Wolfgang Klinder, the founder and CEO of MUNICH FABRIC START, who isnot only proud of the fully booked event, but also of the investment in the new booth system as well as in the trend areaand the foyer. BlueZone Denim-Trends:RECYCLING AND LASER TECHNOLOGY
Metallic effects, 3D prints and transparent coatings are representatives of modernity in the new denim season, aspredicted by our trendscout Joachim Baumgartner.The theme “Street and Art” appears in the fully-booked BLUEZONE, where over 55 exhibitors of the denim industry,from “ISKO” to “CANDIANI”, display their collections of rock, punk and hip-hop characteristics. Loose cuts, spandexand super-stretch materials remain the measure of all denims. Neopatching comes as a new design element. Sustainabilityshould not be missed in the denim world. As new recycling and laser technologies are becoming more and moreimportant, they will be demonstrated in the live performance of the laser denim finishing specialists “Jeanologia”from Spain.

Extension OF THE ECO SECTOR
MUNICH FABRIC START does not see itself merely as an expert for sustainability in the Denim World. Another step inthis direction is the new additionals area in the organic selection, the MUNICH FABRIC START forum for sustainability.In general, the importance of trims and accessories suppliers has increased at the fair, with more than 200 specialistsshowcase their collections in two large halls. This development should be taken into account at the Eco sector. On topof the over 500 certified fabrics, trims and accessories are tested and certified for the first time. With organic selection,we focus on high fashion standards of sustainable materials. This is well supported by the international and exclusivecooperation with C.L.A.S.S. (Creativity, Lifestyle and Sustainable Synergy). The cosmopolitan platform is not only knownfor its high-quality archive of Eco-materials, but also as a completely new approach that combines design and innovationinto a holistic concept.

Besides the roundtable discussion organized by C.L.A.S.S., the informative highlight is the first Eco Summit in cooperationwith Future for Cotton and Greenpeace. On 6 February at 2:00 pm., Alexandra Perschau, Future for Cotton, willgive a lecture in the Eco Village about “Better Cotton compared to organic cotton – the market situation and relevance”.On 6 February at 3:00 pm., Manfred Santen, Greenpeace, will discuss about PFC in the outdoor clothing industry, withthe topic “Chemistry for every day”.

Design Studios
Comprehensive trend information and inspiration can be found in the Design Studios. With the new exhibition formatas a continuation of the Pattern Studios, MUNICH FABRIC START responds to the growing need of the textileindustry for creative design solutions. The idea behind the Design Studios is a real studio where artists and textiledesigners present and market their fabric designs, artworks and uniqueness. Companies joining us include Anteprima, Musticstyle, Bluestudio and Creations Robert Vernet.

Final Press Release: The international fabric fair defies the airline strike and the economic climate with record exhibitor numbers and optimism

“It is a pleasure to work here at the fair,” one visitor said commenting on the 33rd edition of MUNICH FABRIC START. What she was referring to here was the fair’s pleasant, constructive working atmosphere, its perfect service and varied supporting programme as well as its comprehensive range of over 860 exhibitors showcasing their fabric and additionals collections to kick off the 2013/14 Autumn/Winter season at Munich’s MOC exhibition centre.

Organisers were able to confirm the positive mood at the fair and the rising visitor numbers at the press conference on Wednesday. Despite the airline strike and the tense economic climate especially in southern Europe 18,200 visitors found their way to Munich. This meant the foreign contingent remained at a constant 35%.  With some 860 exhibitors MUNICH FABRIC START was even able to post a new record. “So far we have thankfully not seen any falls in numbers. The difficult economic situation in Italy, for instance, has not yet really impacted us at all,” said trade fair head Wolfgang Klinder. The fair’s relaxed optimism was once again due to its strong domestic market.  This meant the European textile sector was in turn able to largely benefit from the host country’s economic driving force. Also definitely contributing to the success here was the wide range of collections from the strongest market players from Europe, Turkey and China.

The quality of the range and the presentation of the new trends in the colour and trend forums were praised by exhibitors and visitors alike. “For us Munich is the kick-off, here we are able to start the new season in full focus,” said Sonja Blömker from Comma, guest speaker at Wednesday’s round table discussion  “Sourcing 2.0” organised by MUNICH FABRIC START and TextilWirtschaft at the Kesselhaus venue. “The new colour scheme and trends were very attractively presented in the foyer. The fair gave us attractive new impulses, especially in the double face and knit segments,” said Blömker. Although menswear is traditionally already ahead in collection sequencing it also uses MUNICH FABRIC START as a source of inspiration and a working platform. The halls, for instance, saw crowds of designers from Drykorn, Levi’s, Next, Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss through to Giorgio Armani. “In Munich we continue to gather information and later after Paris we sound out the range. Then the themes crystallise,” said Drykorn menswear designer Fred Götz.  “It’s fun to be here,” added Matthias Rehbeck from Joop!, “The audience is becoming more and more international and classy. The trade fair has become very structured and ‘grown up”.

This time MUNICH FABRIC START’s trend expert Joachim Baumgartner dubbed the event “Clash of Plenty” i.e. the meeting or wild mixing of different eras and styles. He particularly highlighted the new opulence and variety of fabrics in his new array of trends that was also visualised at a high level on MUNICH FABRIC START’s highly respected Colour Card. In her presentation of the macro trends Catherine Van Baal from the trend agency WGSN confirmed the new desire for luxury. The trend theme entitled “21st Century Romance” primarily focuses on history and traditional craftsmanship. Here rich tableaux develop thanks to decorative ornamentation and opulent details. Gold plays a key role amidst this rich, classical theme. While progressive brands and small new labels headed in this direction other designers still went in very pragmatic search of colour. “I am happy that colour is still on show. In Germany successful themes are sometimes abandoned too quickly,” said Matthias Rehbeck from Joop!

The strong start of the new creative Patternstudios platform – presenting fashion designs and prints in a studio-like setting for the first time now – was not only confirmed by Elisa Ostländer from Lica: “Patternstudios is going down well. Many people are really enthusiastic about the range of one-offs,” said the exhibitor commenting on her premiere at the fair. A plus point at the fair for many new exhibitors was the large increase in customers from the German-speaking area with its strong purchasing power.
The other new areas and concepts frequently used by MUNICH FABRIC START to pick up on market developments and create new impulses have also definitely become established. With 22 exhibitors the Shirtings segment featured not just a new premium stand system but also a pooled presentation of high-quality shirt fabrics. “We are very satisfied with the footfall and feedback here. Munich is and remains the most important trade fair for the German-speaking market,” said Carsten Bleimund at Brennet.
Visitors and the roughly 55 exhibitors in the fair’s BLUEZONE denim segment in the neighbouring Zenith Hall also felt very much at home. “We are very satisfied and have seen all our key accounts from Gerry Weber and Mac through to Bogner. As ever, organisation of the BLUEZONE is very good,” said Marco Lucietti from Isko. He said production was running to capacity and was to be expanded further in 2013 – another sign of the strong return of jeans, as forecast by many trend experts. Patrick Arce from Olinda confirmed the popularity here, especially in the full package business. His company carried the fair’s new logo R.M.S. – Ready Made Solutions which was this time extended across the entire trade fair. Visitors were interested in this feature and now also know what this name means,” said Arce.

As ever, visitors also came in search of lightness and sustainable fabrics. The fair’s sustainability expert Alex Vogt from the communication agency Kern in Frankfurt was delighted with visitors’ increased interest in the forums OrganicSelection and Eco Village. Here MUNICH FABRIC START once again showcased the exhibitors’ over 500 sustainable fabrics. “At the beginning only jerseys were featured here. Now it has become a very varied and creative trend forum, also featuring fully certified prints for instance,” explained Vogt. The supporting programme also underlined the fair’s sustainability focus with lectures by such speakers as Greenpeace’s Ulrike Kallee and the Sustainability Talk in cooperation with the Textile Exchange in the BLUEZONE.

The mood at MUNICH FABRIC START’s legendary Oktoberfest on the second day of the fair was really euphoric. Over 2,000 guests celebrated here in a specially erected marquee with catering care of Feinkost Käfer and music from the famous Oktoberfest band Gerry & Gary.

Kicking off the 2013/14 Autumn/Winter season MUNICH FABRIC START – the international trade fair for fabric and additionals suppliers – sends out a strong signal for a positive new season boasting a record number of 850 exhibitors and backed by the stable German fashion industry. A wealth of fabrics not seen in a long time adds even more suspense to the design and sourcing business. Munich awaits the nearly 20,000 visitors with a huge range of information on trends, innovations in the sourcing segment as well as on the future of sustainability in fashion, which are all presented at the Munich Exhibition Centre MOC as well as in the neighbouring Zenith Hall.

Incidentally, the increase in exhibitors is spread equally across  all areas. The Asia Salon, for example, reports growth to some 70 exhibitors. “Our strength lies in consistently asserting the selective approach of the trade fair by presenting just the best from each segment and country for our visitors,” says trade fair boss Wolfgang Klinder. 
The Shirtings area, which celebrated its debut at the previous trade fair in January, also proved to be of relevance for the market. The number of exhibitors who present high-end shirting fabrics in this dedicated area of Hall 4 doubled from 20 to 40 and included the likes of Brennet, Canclini, Testa, Getzner and Somelos.

For the team at MUNICH FABRIC START, however, this does not mean they can rest on their laurels. Avid exchange with the industry and short decision-making channels give rise to ever new ideas and impulses for presenting attractive ranges at the trade fair. The new Area Pattern Studios is the trade fair’s response to the growing need in the textile industry for creative design solutions. The idea underlying Pattern Studios is that of a workshop where artists and textile designers can showcase and market their fabric designs, genuine artwork and one-off pieces. The Pattern Studios are located in a specially signposted area on the first floor of the MOC offering a circle of fine exhibitors like Gibson Design, Amsterstampa, LICA Design, Bernini, Fluxus and Anteprima a new creative platform.
This creative Infopool completes MUNICH FABRIC START’s wide offering in terms of information, technical lectures and panel discussions. In the Foyer between Halls 1 and 2 visitors can find the trendsetting Colourforum, which relates to the different themes of the colour card of MUNICH FABRIC START. Thanks to the extensive research efforts undertaken by the MUNICH FABRIC START team the trade fair itself  becomes an important trend scout and information provider for the approximately 20,000 designers and sourcing experts that get together in Munich twice a year.

Mix and reassemble in a new way – this is the principal theme of the season and recurring one for all segments – and do so as excitingly and consistently as ever. A multitude of materials are mixed into a wild array as are styles and epochs. Standards are abolished and in the process contrasting components such as matt and shine, angular and rounded, masculine and feminine, past and future, east and west and heaven and hell all come together. Maximalism –minimalism. The wealth of ideas and the diversity of the past season are consistently continued making even more use of silk, wool, fur and leather. Instead of plain cotton everything revolves around interesting new surfaces: patterned, raised, padded, voluminous, over-printed, appliquéd, combined, patched. Fashion becomes jewellery, simple things are upgraded – they are finished in a technical or playful way with, for instance, big, eye-catching additionals such as pearls, gold and bling. More bling bling, more luxury. Everything is higher quality, more chic – even in the denim segment.

After seasons packed with chinos and coloured flat wovens denim is now in the starting blocks to make a striking comeback. The question is when rather than if this blue classic will find its way to end users’ hearts again. The BlueZone is already perfectly set for the next denim boom now offering over 55 exhibitors – including such market leaders as Isko, Candiani, Tejidos Royo and New Bramatex – who will provide an extensive preview of the innovations and trends for the 2013/14 season for two days. The denim industry again focuses on sustainable manufacturing techniques ranging from water-saving laundry and finishing processes to innovative recycling methods demonstrated in the Green Zone.

MUNICH FABRIC START’s newly designed seminar forum Trend Visions offers non-stop interesting talks about trends, innovations and ecological themes. 

Making their debut at the past trade fair, the Sustainability Talks will be continued with high-calibre speakers in cooperation with Textile Exchange at the Cinema of the Trend Platform WGSN in the BlueZone.  

Sustainability is also the core theme of the papers delivered by Ulrike Kallee of Greenpeace Germany. At the Eco Village she will introduce visitors to the new Detox campaign on Tuesday, 4 September, from 2.00 – 3.00 pm and on Wednesday, 5 September from 11.00 -12.00 noon. 

“Sourcing 2.0 – Creativity and Cost Pressure” is the title of the panel discussion of MUNICH FABRIC START with TextilWirtschaft magazine on the second day of the fair (5 September) from 5.00 pm at the Kesselhaus venue opposite the BlueZone.

Following the roundtable we’re off to the legendary “Oktoberfest” of MUNICH FABRIC START. Here tradition meets with modernity. Bavarian “humpa bands” with fashion business. From 6.30 pm the party will kick off again in the marquee next to the Zenith Hall. Like every year catering will come care of Feinkost Käfer.

MUNICH FABRIC START offers an ever wider service portfolio not only for press representatives but also for buyers. The new Buyers Club provides selected teams of buyers with a suitable retreat for internal meetings and treats them to Bavarian specialities.

The “counterpart” for the media can be found – as before – at the Press Office in Room K2B in the foyer of MUNICH FABRIC START. The blue shuttle bus with the compliments of Cotton USA will again shuttle you free of charge and at regular intervals from the MOC to Munich airport. The first bus to MUNICH FABRIC START will leave from the airport on Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 8.30 am and on Thursday from 9.15 am. After that every 45 minutes.
