Lotte Gulpers (1995, Heerlen, The Netherlands), a designer based in Leeuwarden, is fascinated by how things were done in the past, to come up with new outcomes. Swart Laeken are handwoven garments made from local Zwartbles wool, dyed with organic indigo and lined with linen. They show how high-quality garments made with care can be designed to last a lifetime. The black woollen fabric, Swart Laeken, portrayed in Dutch 17th-century paintings reflect a quality far removed from the modern fashion industry. Today’s focus on aesthetics and profit margins result in badly-constructed clothing made of cheap mixed-fibre fabrics.
