Luxury has always been full of contradictions. It is admired for its craftsmanship and fascination, yet often criticized for its excess. Living Matter addresses this tension and poses the question: What if luxury were not defined by rarity or exclusivity, but by responsibility and creativity?
Indigo, a color with a rich history, is at the heart of this project. Denim traditionally symbolizes strength and durability; its ruggedness is associated with labor and utility. In this case, indigo is used to provoke. Bio-materials such as Indigo Fur, Indigo BioLeather, and Indigo Veil transform the typical roughness of denim into something soft, light, and almost elegant. These materials are designed to feel high-end, yet are simultaneously intended to change, age, and eventually return to the natural cycle.
This process utilizes marine biopolymers, plant fibers, and even charcoal residues, which are blended with cotton and natural indigo dyes. The results are not merely surfaces, but materials shaped through techniques such as folding, pleating, and fur processing. They appear alive, bridging scientific precision with artisanal sophistication. Each piece tells a story of what happens when the old and the new converge.
What stands out is how beautiful these materials are, without any restraint. Sustainable design is often presented in muted colors, as if restraint were the only form of responsibility. Living Matter, however, takes a different approach: the indigo appears powerful and vibrant, with rich, sensory, and highly appealing textures. The message: taking responsibility for the planet by no means implies sacrificing style.
Luxury sets the tone for the entire industry and shapes what people desire and why they are interested in fashion in the first place. Living Matter challenges this influence and calls for a shift from exploitation to a responsible use of resources. In doing so, bio-based materials are redefined not as a compromise, but as the ultimate form of desirability.
The project will be presented at the Sustainable Innovations Forum at Munich Fabric Start in September 2025 and, thanks to the collaboration with OFFICINA +39, who provide the RECYCROM™ RTD OCEAN dye, and EU COTTON, who provide the raw cotton, it is taking place in exactly the right setting. By pushing boundaries and presenting forward-looking visions for the fashion world, the project has the potential to position bio-based materials not as a substitute or compromise, but as the new epitome of attractiveness and desirability.
